Caregiving is very stressful and if you are caring for someone, whether it is a parent, a friend, or a spouse, it’s not easy. There are times when you may be putting in a full day of work before the day has even started! In this article are 9 risk factors for caregiver burnout and to recognize them before stress becomes a serious problem.

In this article from the Mayo Clinic, there are detailed risk factors for caregiver burnout. It’s important to recognize them before stress becomes a serious problem:

  1. Being female
  2. Having fewer years of formal education
  3. Living with the person you are caring for
  4. Social isolation
  5. Having depression
  6. Financial difficulties
  7. A higher number of hours spent caregiving
  8. Lack of coping skills and difficulty solving problems
  9. Lack of choice in being a caregiver

It’s not uncommon for burnout and depression to manifest as anger or resentment. Frustration and overwhelm can leave you feeling angry or destructive. If this is the case, leave the setting immediately and reach out to an emergency services provider.
